The purpose of this topic is to discuss the role of faculty in teaching leadership studies. The focus is on why to teach leadership, when to teach leadership, what to teach about leadership, and how to teach it.

Since leadership is a process, students benefit most from learning how this process works and applying it in their daily interactions with others. Important leadership behaviors can be learned and practiced early in life. They can be learned from parents, teachers, peers, or other significant others.

Using the interactive approach, leadership skills can be successfully taught and learned. Therefore, teachers can create the appropriate climate for teaching leadership skills through teaching integrity, intellectual humility, appropriate equity, critical thinking, specific class structure, and self-directed humor.

This study evaluated and summarized the results of using simulation in prelicensure management and leadership courses for nurses. This was an integrative study of original articles published between 2008 and 2018. In January 2019, PsychINFO, CINAHL, PubMed, and SCOPUS were searched to identify relevant articles using the following terms: “management,” “leadership,” “simulation,” “nursing,” “education,” and “student.”

A total of 10 articles were included in the study. Four key themes were identified from the content analysis: acquiring skills or understanding delegation, improving teamwork or collaboration skills, improving decision-making and problem-solving skills, and increasing communication skills. Incorporating simulation into nursing management and leadership courses has the potential to enhance nursing students’ skills in delegation, problem-solving, decision-making, communication, and teamwork.

Use of Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs)

By applying clinical simulated scenarios in the OSCEs like controlled setting it is easy to assess the leadership and management skill of students. When students are evaluated under high pressure according to the provided situation it provides insight into the readiness of students.

Incorporation of Self-Assessment and Peer Evaluation

It is very essential for the students to engage the students in self-assessment and peer evaluation, it enhances their understanding about self-awareness and personal growth. Understanding effective leadership can be enhanced by reflection and peer evaluation.

Introducing Leadership and Management Projects

When project-based learning is applied, it allows students to implement their existing knowledge in the real-world frame. Projects like quality improvement initiative or leading a community health campaign, providing practical expertise in the leadership role.

There are many different factors that affect health and longevity, from genetic inheritance to public policies. Physicians have considerable influence on patients’ health and health-related costs, but we know little about the extent of this influence beyond clinical decisions such as appropriate diagnosis and treatment.

This topic shows that primary care physicians’ health management styles significantly affect their patients’ health outcomes. Using data on the population of statin users in Denmark and the allocation of patients to their primary care physicians, we show that the physician’s ability to facilitate adherence to prescribed medications has significant positive effects on patient treatment outcomes and health costs, even after controlling for observable and unobservable patient characteristics. Policy interventions aimed at improving this aspect of physicians’ health management style have important implications for patient outcomes and health costs.

Education of leadership and management skills can enhance job satisfaction and retention of nursing care providers. The confident nurse leaders who feel confident in their abilities are more likely to remain in their position and play their role positively in patient care.
